Private Training

Ages 12 weeks to adults.

Private training can support a wide range of goals, including:

  • Basic manners for dogs of any age
  • Focus, recall, and leash skills
  • Jumping, pulling, door manners, and household routines
  • Confidence-building and new experiences
  • Cooperative care and handling
  • New puppy or new dog support
  • Preparing for a baby, visitors, or household changes
  • Behavior concerns such as fear, anxiety, reactivity, or resource guarding
  • Custom goals that do not fit neatly into a group class

Some dogs — and some humans — do best with one-on-one support before jumping into a group class. Some families need help with specific behaviors at home. Some dogs need a quieter learning environment, a customized plan, or a trainer’s full attention to feel successful.

We’re here for that, too.

Private training at Trusted Tails Dog Training gives you personalized support built around your dog, your goals, and your real life. Whether you are working on manners, leash skills, confidence, behavior concerns, or a brand-new routine, we will help you create a plan that feels realistic, kind, and achievable.

Our private sessions use science-based, positive reinforcement training to build trust, communication, and skills that make everyday life easier for both ends of the leash.

Three Ways to Train

We offer private training in the setting that best supports your goals.

At Our Center

Our Gurnee training center provides a controlled, distraction-managed space for focused skill-building. This can be a great option for dogs working on manners, impulse control, leash foundations, confidence-building, or skills that need to be introduced in a thoughtful environment before practicing in busier places.

In Your Home

Sometimes the best place to train is exactly where the behavior is happening. In-home sessions are helpful for challenges like jumping on guests, counter-surfing, door dashing, settling, crate routines, new baby preparation, or household management. We can see your space, understand your routines, and help you set up your home in a way that supports your dog’s success.

Off-Site

Some skills need real-world practice. Off-site sessions may be helpful for leash walking, neighborhood distractions, recall practice, confidence in public spaces, or helping your dog use their skills outside of familiar environments. We choose locations based on your dog’s needs and comfort level so training stays productive and supportive.

Why Choose Private Training?

The biggest benefit of private training is personalization. In a group class, the curriculum is already set. In private training, the plan is built around your dog’s temperament, learning style, environment, and your family’s needs.

Private training is also a better fit for dogs who need extra space, dogs with behavior concerns, or families working through challenges that require a more careful, individualized approach. We can move at your dog’s pace, adjust the environment, and focus on the skills that matter most to your daily life.

Combining Private Training With Other Services

Private training can stand on its own, but it also pairs beautifully with our other programs. Some families begin with private sessions and later move into group classes. Others use private training alongside Day School or The Good Manners Trail for extra support with specific skills.

There is no one “right” path. We will help you choose the combination that supports your dog and your family best.

Getting Started

Private training begins with a conversation about your goals, your dog’s needs, and where you are hoping to go together. From there, we help you build a plan rooted in trust, positive reinforcement, and real-life progress.

At Trusted Tails, our goal is not just to teach your dog what to do. It is to help you understand each other, strengthen your relationship, and build skills that last — one trusted tail at a time.
